I went through the Arcane Labyrinth last night and got Ricard's (second?) best weapon. It took three=and-a-half hours, so I don't know if it was worth it. But my characters sure did get a lot more HP. For some reason, Firion maxed out his agility stat...
Take the airship to the new Emperor's (same as the old Emperor's) house and land the airship. We start at floor seven, and it's a quick walk north to the throne room. So long as you jump over that pitfall trap. Too bad you can't jump in this game. So we fall to the first floor and have to make our way up. At this point, none of the enemies pose a threat, and I fast forwarded through them all. Most of the treasures aren't worth going after, but I did get a protect ring for Maria from a Lamia Queen guarding a chest. There are also three elixirs in chests on floor seven, but I didn't find the path to get to them. The dungeon is quite the maze, and the offshoots take you far from where you came from. Expect to get lost.
After walking around for an hour, we finally see the Dark Knight in all his glory. He asks if we'll be able to defeat him, and Maria gets between Firion and Leon. She's trying to play peacemaker, but Leon keeps running his mouth about ruling the world. It is pure strength that runs the world work, and he has it in abundance. And then a portal opens up behind him, and a demon exits from it. He looks pretty cool and says that Leon has nothing. Palamecia has no power compared to what he's gained in Hell. The demon finally introduces himself as the previous Emperor, who never gets named. It's Mateus, by the way.
Blue fires surround us and begin to close in. Ricard jumps forward and tells us to call the wyvern while he buys time. Ricard is adamant that slaying the final dragoon will not be as easy as believed. Maria calls out for our departing party member as the wyvern picks us up. Light engulfs the castle as new spires rise from the mountains. They look to be crystalline in nature and really add to the aura. We all return to Fynn, and Hilda isn't happy to see the Dark Knight in her halls. We explain the situation, and she says she'll let us do what we need to. Leon agrees to fight against the Mateus, but he's really bad! He's decked out in heavy armor and duel wielded a sword and axe. He'll be my ancient sword user from now on, as well as my time mage because someone's gotta haste Guy.
For some reason, we walked out of the throne room, so walk back in. Hilda and Gordon tell us about the Jade Passage. Jade Passage is said to be the gateway to Hell, for which Ultima was created to seal. I guess that means we can't just drop in from above, so we'll be ending this part of the playthrough...
...tomorrow.
Final Fantasy II is a three part dungeon rush, if I remember right. And I always try to give the final dungeon its own entry. I (don't) need to make Leon not suck, so I did a little bit more of the Arcane Labyrinth. Maybe I'll try to get Maria her best weapon, but I kinda doubt it. I feel like we're more than strong enough to end this, even with a pathetic Leon. If not, I'll cheat again. Guy has 8000 HP; I have faith. Even more so because I got the Excalibur from Elina. She took Kain and went somewhere, hoping to forget the bad memories of her home. I hope all goes well for then, but we'll never see them again.
