The last Square SNES game!

I've been watching a lot of SNESDrunk videos over the last few months, and I've seen a lot of games I've never heard of. One such game is Treasure of Rudra. It's a game with three main characters and a fifteen day time limit. Each character plays their story separately, but I'm pretty sure/hoping they come together at the end. They always do. But the big gimmick is the magic word system. You can create your own spells from words to cast them against your enemies. It looks interesting! But is it?

I start the game as Sion, the knight. He and his friend, Doug, are on guard duty for castle Cryunne. Their friend, Rostam, returns to the castle with a cultist in custody. The boys think the cultist is the girl, but Rostam tells us she's the one who got the target. Her name is Foxy. They take the villain to jail, and we're supposed to join them.

Make your way there, but you'll find Doug and Foxy talking. Foxy works with a researcher in another country, but I don't remember why she came here. I think he's into her. A few of the guards tell us about the cult that guy is in. He warships Rudra, a god that wipes all life from the planet every 4000 years. Continue on to the prison, but there isn't much for us. Rostam and Huey are in charge of the interrogation, and we can't do anything despite reality wanting to. We're supposed to be looking for our mentor, Taurus, anyway. With no other option, we head to the throne room.

The Tower of Valiant has been on our mind. It's a ceremony/test to crown the greatest knight in the realm. Taurus has been missing for a long time, so the King believes it's time to make a new general. Sion will be allowed to participate, along with Huey and Rostam. Before we hear more, Doug barges in. The cultist escaped! The King tells us to go after it, following Huey and Rostam. We run through our hometown of Vad, but there's nothing here. Keep heading south on the world map to the Giant's Tower.

A random voice gives us backstory on Rudra and reminds us the end of humanity is coming in fifteen days. We see a giant named Surt on top of the tower as the cultist reaches the top. Both are shocked and annoyed to see each other, but Surt is more interested in the gem in the larger tombstone. There's another giant in the relief. The cultist warns Surt not to take the gem, but the giant doesn't listen. Our friends reach the top in time to see the cultist thrown off. Sion gets to them, and all three of us attack Surt. It's an auto battle, but we hold our own. At the end, though, something strange happens. The gem Surt had disappears, and Sion loses an eye. This causes Surt to go mad and knocks everyone out. Doug gets here to protect Sion, but Surt jumps off the tower, taking Rostam and Duey with him.

Sion wakes up the next day, and Foxy is waiting for him to remind him what happened. The kingdom is now looking for the bodies of Huey and Rostam, which the chancellor tells us to help when we speak to him after Foxy. Foxy joins the team, and we return to the Giant's Tower. We're to look for clues, which we do by climbing the tower again. MP is at a premium here, so consider buying tasty waters in town. Otherwise, this is our first dungeon. Combat is your typical turn based variety, and it's nothing major. Every character has a job, but I don't think skills exist. We fight, open chests, and find Huey's Ring. I realize now that the gem Surt wanted is somehow in Sion's eye. The cultist said the gem would choose its owner, so did it pick Sion? Huey is here, as well, and says he hears a voice from a nearby room. But he can't find a way in. Sion asks him to go home, and we finish up.

We investigate the tombstone again, but the floor suddenly breaks. We're dropped to a room below and see a chained giant. The game makes it seem like Rudra killed them all 8000 years ago, but they weren't very thorough. The giant asks us to free him, but we're suspicious. We've met Surt, after all. It turns out, Surt chained Tule here, so we have a mutual enemy. Sion frees him, and it's a good thing too. The tombstone above illuminates, and a third giant emerges from it, demanding its gem back!

Abilijer isn't fond of water spells. I'd imagine he'd hate wind, the opposite of thunder, but Tule is the powerhouse here. Despite being a giant, he's a mage. I probably should have said this sooner, but fights will test your basics of the magical system. You could have learned a few basic elemental words in town, but I tried to see what powers my family have me. Ushio's water damage carried me. Tule joins the team, and we can make our way out. Left of the treasure in the next room is the exit. Fall through all the holes to find more chests and reach the bottom faster. Return to the King to end this arc. With all that's happened, the King tells us we won't be able to participate in the Tower of Valiant competition. Our friends are dead, and the King doesn't think we can see. Sion protests and pleads for his sight, which changes the King's mind. Foxy and Tule will be our replacements.

To the north is Danslief, where the tournament will be taking place. Upgrade your gear if you have the money and head to the north of town. It's the colosseum, and we need to speak to the receptionist. We can begin immediately, which I do. Make your way around to the arena and prepare to fight the Nergals. We have a choice for this fight: one three-on-three battle or two/three one-on-one fights. I tried for the team fight, but the Nergals murdered us too fast. Sion won his fight pretty easily, but Foxy failed. Fortunately, Tule got a lucky crit and won. We'll advance just as the son breaks through.

This planet has been shrouded in pollution for as long as everyone knows. Tule said it was our ancestors' doing, but this light must be a sign from Rudra we're going to win. The next fight is tomorrow, but we'll see Doug as we leave the colosseum. He said a swarm of blue butterflies heralded in the sunlight. He wants help to meet a priest, which we agree to help with. But I'll do that...

... tomorrow!

You can flip between any of the three characters from the main menu, and they change things in the world based on what's been done. I'm thinking about giving each character two days of play before switching.
