Mushroom Rock Road (or whatever the specific location is we're at) is a winding pathway through the canyon. Despite the mass of Crusaders nearby, we have to battle our way through. Nothing too major, though. Those fungus guys are the only things worth mentioning. Don't physically attack them, or else they'll counter and put your party to sleep. It's around this time that I begin to notice that I have very few Ability Spheres. I've read that mobs on the north end of the Mi'hen Highroad drop them, but that's already behind me, so look forward! It's a long walk to the HQ, but I like walks.
We find an elevator up and take it. Before taking the second elevator, follow Gotta to Lussu. Gotta wants to be on the beach, fighting Sin, but instead, he's on patrol duty. Lussu calls it an important role, but the younger Crusader doesn't believe it. He eventually gives way, though. Wakka tries to talk Lussu out of using forbidden machina. Lussu remains true to this fight, which causes Wakka to throw a mild tantrum. Before we leave, Lussu wants to tell Wakka something, and Lulu tries to stop him. Lussu is the one who convinced Chappu to join the Crusaders. Wakka punches him. We learn more that Chappu and Lulu were going to be married, but, as Chappu said, "Being with your girl is good, but keeping Sin away from her is better." Commander Lucile is heard telling everyone to get to their posts, and our conversation ends. Yuna tries to stop Lussu, as well, to no avail. He says this is his choice, just as becoming a summoner was hers. Wakka wants Lussu to survive so he can hit him again.
We head up the nearby elevator and see several cannons. Wakka kicks one. He's wearing sandals, so I'm sure you can guess how it goes. Lulu informs us that Chappu left the sword Wakka gave him and took a machina gun on the day he died, and that's why Wakka hates technology. He says it's just because he hates taboo stuff. We head closer to the Command Center, and Wakka gets mad. Yuna tries to correct him for the sake of humanity. We see Gotta again, dejected. If we talk to him after this conversation, he can decide his fate. I didn't do that, so I trust the devs made a logical choice.
Later on, we meet up with another Maester. Kinnoc, commander of the Crusaders. He doesn't look very warriorlike, but he does know Auron. Auron wants nothing to do with him, despite the hug after ten long years. He's also a terrible person. He openly states that the plan won't work, and Seymour stops him. Later on, Auron doesn't understand how Kinnoc is a Maester, but the guy in charge hears him. Auron gets asked where he's been for ten years, and he says "he's fulfilling a promise." and is then asked about Zanarkand. Yuna feels like we don't belong, and the battle starts. We can talk to our friends, and Kinnoc, again before everything goes down. O'aka snuck his way in if we need to buy stuff or save.
The operation starts when we learn that Sin comes for its spawn, which have been gathered here. Auron is certain Sin'll come, and he reminds us who Sin is. We then see Sin rise from the bay in front of us. He's black, for some reason. The Al Bead cannons open fire, but they don't seem to do much. They do trigger a lot of Sincale to fall into the sea, which set their sights on the Crusaders waiting for them. The camera then cuts to the holding pen filled with Sinspawn. It was hanging over the beach but fell to the ground with the door open when winds began to howl. We're suddenly beset by a giant combined boss!
Gui is an interesting fight. It has two arms that die in two or three hits, a head that shakes before it vomits on you, and a body with 12000 HP. The arms come back in a few turns but need to be destroyed as they defend the body. Once the head is dead, it stays dead. Before then, though, it can cast Thunder. Even with the arms gone, the body can still attack you with its nubs and cast demi. Focus the arms first, unless the head starts shaking. Bring in Wakka or Lulu to calm it down, or else it'll cast Toxin on one character. I don't know what Toxin is, but I didn't want to learn. Once the head was dead, I brought in Tidus to cast Haste on him, Auron, Wakka, and Yuna (in case I need a healer). Two Hellfires by Ifrit can take out the head, but he may not survive the second one due to cast delay. I ended up using two Mega-Potions when I got too determined to kill his arms. Be a bit more defensive, and you probably won't need to.
After Gui dies, Sin forms a shield around him that acts more like an offensive attack. It reaches the beach, and any Crusader standing near it is instantly evaporated... This also knocks the party away. We see Yuna get off the ground and look towards a revived Gui battling Seymour. Auron is nearby, and the two of them run to the Maester's aid.
Challenge begins to play and is reason enough to hate the Remaster OST.
This battle functions exactly like the first fight, except Gui has less HP, and Seymour has second level black magic. I had Yuna get her Overdrive and had Valefor took out the arms. Then her Overdrive came up, which took out the head. I thought about ending the battle just using her but decided I wanted an aeon to live when I summon in. Seymour finished it with Watera. Overkilling Gui gets a bigger reward, so this was for the best.
The camera cuts to an Al Bead laser beam cannon as the crew gets it turned on. They take forever to aim but eventually manage to shoot at Sin. The barrier is holding back, but it's beginning to bubble. And then the cannon explodes...without ever touching Sin. Yuna is seen, disappointed. We then see Tidus, face down on the beach surrounded by corpses. He pulls himself together and examines a few of the bodies before he finds a living Gotta having a major panic attack. Tidus turns around to see Sin head back to the sea. For reasons he couldn't understand, he tried to chase after him. He says he could feel Jecht from the ruins of a city underwater. Yuna thinks about summoning, but Seymour says there's no point. Yuna just wants to feel useful. We then see a surreal location where the souls of the dead Crusaders walk around a crystal tree. Lussu is there. The mysterious boy comes on screen before getting replaced by a Blitzball. Tidus recalls a memory of confronting his alcoholic father and his diminishing Blitzball career. "Why do today what you leave for tomorrow," says a mid bender Jecht.
Tidus wakes up on the beach and talks about The Sending and wonders when it will end. Auron is nearby and, in his own way, congratulates him for surviving. We catch up to the rest of the party, just as Kinnoc, as cocky as ever, leaves. Auron calls him out, and Kinnoc says how much Auron has changed. Seymour comes to us and talks to Yuna. He wants her to be the people's strength and allow others to live vicariously through her. She is Spiria's hope! He then offers to the Zaon to her Yunalesca, and he bids her farewell.
Auron reminds us Sin is Jecht, and he came here for Tidus. He wanted to show his power to his son because Jecht wants Tidus to kill him. Tidus asks how Auron knows this, and he laughs. The party heads to Djose Temple down the road. Yuna is creepily chipper. Kimahari finally speaks and tells Tidus it's because she is the bright light in dark times. We can't worry, or else she'll try harder. Tidus will try to get a smile out of him, and...it's a smile...alright. The trek to Djose is straight, and we see surviving Crusdeers along the way.
When we reach a fork, Tidus asks how much longer until we arrive at Zanarkand, and we learn it's a long trip. We can't skip it because Yuna needs to pray to the fayth in every temple. It's disturbing how happy she's pretending to be. If she maintained her regular composer, it'd be one thing, but this is something else altogether.
Auron tells us not to tell Yuna about Jecht. She'd react negatively to it. Tidus then asks why he needed to know about it. Auron says he didn't want him to find out at a bad time and become emotional. Tidus denies such a possibility before admitting it to himself. We walk closer to the temple and talk to Lucil, Emma, Clasko, and the last Chocobo Steed. We then see lightning bolts raise rocks that surround the temple, which means another summoner is inside. Yuna wants to hurry, but I decided we'll do it...
...tomorrow.
Everywhere we go Yuna dances. I forgot how dark FFX was.
