Case of Barrett pt. 1

This takes place several months after he leaves in Tifa’s story. Despite telling his friends to "learn how to give and not just take", he’s unsure of how to do that himself. He then thinks that being with Marlene, his daughter, brought him peace, but he felt guilty about something, and being near his child was a crutch. I didn’t get this as your family is kinda supposed to be a crutch, isn't it?

For the past six months, Barrett has found nothing to bring him solace. He has, though, found Geostigma. It isn’t an illness that only affects Midgar, but the whole world. He also saw people living without Mako. During this time, he’s become a monster hunter of sorts, using his gun arm as it’s supposed to be used. In time, in Junon, a child bumped into his gun, causing the child to bleed. His mother pleaded for his life, an act that caused Barrett to rethink his arm.

He then went to where he first got his gun, Old Man Sakaki. We then gain some backstory on the gun arm: how it was made and how Barrett wanted it to be more adaptable with swappable tools. When he gained his arm, Sakaki was disturbed by Barrett’s want for revenge. He made the gun anyway but never wanted to see Barrett again. Disobeying the request, Barrett returned to Sakaki and asked for a hand, as he was tired of people being afraid of him. Sakaki said he’d make it but asked Barrett to help his nephew in the meantime.

The next day, Barrett loaded himself into the back of a coal-powered pick-up truck. He was amazed that coal had made a comeback. He was slightly bummed that it sucked. It functioned just like a coal-powered train worked in the real world, with two people needed to shovel it into a burner. At some point, Barrett and one of the workers had a mild argument. The worker assumed Barrett was upset, but he wasn’t. It was pointed out, and, well, it turns out Barrett was mad. After a short talk where they quickly reconciled, Barrett asked for some advice. He wanted to know how to make up for his sins. The worker says to live as best you can and then to go looking for monster dens if he’s gonna be a monster hunter. Barrett thought that the monster den might be inside himself.

The truck went to a small town that grew and sold potatoes. Barrett wondered about the economics of potatoes and how everyone got along without machinery. He considered using his body in the fields of Midgar, utilizing the strength of five men. He then pondered about being a leader and turning Edge into a farming and livestock town. He then daydreamed about the old AVALANCHE being farmers, which nostalgically upset him.

He then overheard Sakaki’s nephew talking with a man from the village. The man wants them to bring a girl to Midgar to be treated for her Geostigma. They try to persuade the man that taking the girl is a bad idea. The trail is long, the truck bed is hot, there’s no guarantee she’ll be saved, and it might be better for her to die with friends and family rather than alone. Before a consensus can be made, the girl dies. Her last words were, “Please take me to Midgar.” All the men regretted their attempts, even if nothing mattered in the end. Out of rage, Barrett fired his gun into the air. Despite his loss, the father’s eyes kept looking forward.

We then go a desert east of Rocket Town, where Shera is discussing a new engine prototype. It’s not going well, but they are making progress on something...
